MeanWize explains texting abbreviations, Gen Z slang and emoji meanings in plain English. If a message, comment or caption has left you unsure what someone meant, this site is built to give you a clear answer quickly, with examples of how the term is used in real conversations.
What We Cover
- Texting abbreviations such as ASL, AFK, HMU and ISTG: what they stand for and how to reply.
- Gen Z slang such as rizz, sigma, delulu and brainrot: where each word came from and how it is used now.
- Emoji and symbol meanings, including how the meaning changes depending on who sends it.
- The Texting Slang Finder, a free tool for looking up a term in seconds.
How We Research and Write
Slang changes meaning depending on the platform and the people using it, so a dictionary-style one-line definition is rarely enough. Before a guide is written, we look at how the term is used in chats, TikTok comments, Snapchat and X. Each guide then covers:
- The most common meaning first, in one or two sentences.
- Other meanings, when a term has more than one, and how to tell which is intended.
- Example messages that show the tone, including when a term can come across as rude or is not suitable for work or school.
- Similar terms and how they differ.
Who Writes MeanWize
MeanWize is written and edited by Sophia Smith, who covers internet slang, texting abbreviations and social media terms.
Corrections and Updates
Slang moves fast. Guides are updated when a term changes meaning or tone, and the date at the top of each guide shows when it was published. If you spot a mistake or an outdated meaning, tell us and we will review it.
